How is the cost to mine 1 Bitcoin calculated?
The production cost formula is straightforward: it measures how much electricity a miner must consume to earn exactly 1 BTC under current network conditions.
Cost per BTC = (efficiency J/TH ÷ 1000) × (network_hashrate / network_blocks_per_day / block_reward) × electricity_rate
Equivalently: how many kWh does this miner need to find 1 BTC worth of blocks, multiplied by your electricity price.
The key inputs are: the miner's efficiency in J/TH (lower is better), the current network difficulty (which determines how hard it is to find a block), the block reward (currently 3.125 BTC), and your electricity rate in $/kWh.
When the BTC price is above the production cost, mining is profitable. When BTC is below production cost, miners are operating at a loss — historically a rare occurrence that has never lasted more than a few months.
Why do different miners have different production costs?
Efficiency (J/TH — joules per terahash) is the key differentiator. A miner that uses 10 J/TH costs half as much electricity per BTC mined as one using 20 J/TH. The most efficient 2024+ machines (SealMiner A4 at 9.5 J/TH, Antminer S21 XP Hyd at 12 J/TH) dramatically undercut the network average production cost.
